Real-World Dog Training
for Calmer, More Reliable Dogs
That’s why our board-and-train programs include real-world transfer training for owners, families, and the places your dog actually lives life.
-
Based in Nipomo, San Luis Obispo County, SLO Life Dog Training serves dog owners across the Central Coast and accepts select board-and-train clients from throughout California. Our limited-enrollment programs build calmer, more reliable dogs through calm leadership, clear communication, and real-world obedience.
Founded by Valency and Clinton Jarvis, SLO Life Dog Training grew from decades of raising, living with, and learning from dogs in our own home — and from rigorous professional training under world-class trainers through American Standard Dog Training Academy. Valency is a CalPoly graduate with a background in psychology, bringing both practical experience and behavioral science into the way we train.
Our balanced approach builds dogs who can think clearly, respond reliably, and make better choices when life gets exciting. We know what it feels like to love a dog with a huge heart, a big personality, and absolutely no idea how to make good choices when the world turns the volume up.
We teach dogs the skills that make everyday life easier: settling calmly, walking politely, holding place, responding around distractions, and looking to their owner for direction. It gives them the clarity, confidence, and self-control to enjoy more freedom without turning life into a full-contact rodeo.

Most dogs can learn to behave in a training facility. That’s the easy part.
The real question is: Will your dog listen at the park? Around guests? At the beach? Outside the vet’s office? During real life?Because dogs don’t naturally generalize well.
A dog can fully understand a command in one environment… and struggle to apply it somewhere new with different people, distractions, smells, energy, and routines.
That’s one of the biggest reasons owners come to us saying: “We tried training before… but it didn’t stick.”
At SLO Life Dog Training, we don’t just train your dog. We train your entire lifestyle around the dog.
That means we spend extensive hands-on time helping owners transfer the training into the places and situations that actually matter:
Your home
Neighborhood walks
Parks
Cafés
Beaches
Pet-friendly stores
Veterinary offices
Groomers
Real public environments with real distractionsAnd unlike most programs, we don’t stop with just the primary owner.
We work with spouses, kids, family members, and anyone regularly involved in your dog’s life so the communication stays clear and consistent across the board.
Because if only the trainer can handle the dog… the training isn’t finished.
Most board-and-train programs end with a quick pickup lesson at the facility. We often spend hours personally coaching owners in the real world: leash handling, timing, structure, communication, follow-through, maintaining reliability long-term
Our goal isn’t just a dog that behaves for us. Our goal is a dog that confidently responds to you in everyday life. That’s the difference between “trained at a facility” and truly integrated real-world obedience.

Dogs are contextual learners. That means a dog may understand a command in one place, with one person, and still struggle to perform it somewhere new.
Behavior can change depending on the environment, distractions, routines, excitement level, stress level, and who is handling the dog.
That’s why some dogs come home from training looking great… then slowly fall apart once real life shows up wearing muddy boots and carrying groceries.
Without proper generalization and owner transfer training, many dogs become “facility trained” instead of truly reliable in daily life.
At SLO Life Dog Training, we train for the real world from the beginning. We don’t just train your dog and send you home hoping for the best.
We teach you how to confidently carry that training into your home, your routines, and the places your dog actually goes.
More freedom. Less stress.
Same goofy grin.
